Vaccinating the Sick and Vulnerable

People with chronic diseases depend most upon the NHS. They cannot easily offend the doctors and nurses, paid to administer Swine flu vaccine. They have no choice but to become the guinea pigs in this novel experiment.

The chronically sick are not just most vulnerable to illnesses. They are also most vulnerable to government politics and to the side effects of compulsory vaccinations.

In five days time, the government will move to inject all those people with chronic illnesses with an untested Swine Flu vaccine. Put simply, these people are the test.

Watch GP incomes rise, as your friendly family doctor supervises this programme.

Dr Shirine Boardman Ask not for whom the bell tolls

A service must reach the people it serves, or else it is not a service. Medicine is culturally specific. An Asian doctor serving an Asian community makes sense!

Dr Shirine Boardman used one Trust database to furnish another Trust database in a hospital that already practices Smart Card Sharing. Meanwhile, her work won prizes (NHS choices ) and she had an impact on the community she served. She was instrumental in setting up the Apnee Sehat project.

I am not Asian, I am not diabetic and I don't work in Leamington Spa. But it is in my interests that the population of this country are encouraged and supported in their need to be healthy.

We cannot continue with this style of Health Service Management.
Competency-based, tick-the-box regulations, protecting those who learn the "rules" not those who know how to do the work. We need people with integrity whom we trust to do the right thing working with systems that support their good intentions. Not a regulatory nightmare subverted by anxious bureaucrats, giving whatever decision most helps their career.

I trust Dr Shirine Boardman did the right thing by her patients and the community that she served. I trust Dr Boardman's integrity and her good intentions.

I do not believe that South Warwickshire Trust and its encumbent CEO has the integrity or good intentions required to carry out the job for which they are paid. In short, they appear to be working for themselves and their own political ends and not their community.

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee..."

Lest we forget

Thank you Rita, and NHS exposed for highlighting the case of Debraj

Last year Belinda also died, on the day of her discharge from a psychiatric ward. Yes questions need to be asked about that too. Belinda, or Binks, as she was better known had spent many years being hounded by the GMC

In 2003/4, 9 of 215 doctors under investigation by the General Medical Council died. 3, at least, were suicide and known to me personally.

Binks was a compassionate, courageous, and well-loved General Practitioner, who left a wider legacy. Binks went through the GMC Health procedures and went back to work. She wrote about her experiences in “Doctors as Patients”

Through her work with the Doctors Support Network she helped other doctors going through what they also found to be degrading and destructive experience. Binks worked with the GMC to improve the way they treat doctors and help humanise that process. Binks raised funding to set up the Doctors Support Line 0870 7650001. This remains the only confidential, anonymous support line for doctors. In addition, Binks worked each year for Crisis at Christmas.

Outside medicine, Binks was a respected and popular hockey and squash player. A Junior Team Memorial Tournament has been set up in her memory. She leaves her parents, her brother and her cherished niece and nephews, Max, Stephanie and Milly.

As was Vanessa Lloyd-Davies

Maj. Vanessa Lloyd-Davies (44) first British female medical officer to head the Household Cavalry, a historic regiment of the British Army commonly identified by its mounted ceremonial duties seen at events such as the Queen's Birthday Parade. Lloyd-Davies was awarded a military MBE in 1993 for her work in Bosnia, where she attended badly wounded children under mortar fire. She suffered from severe depression and committed suicide in England on February 16, 2005.

and for all those not here named

Superblogging - was the game worth the candle?

I can't help wondering whether Black, Needham or Paice believe that suspending a junior doctor in training was worth the sacrifice of their Internet reputations.

The Internet that caused the crisis, Dr Scot Junior put a few choice if ill chosen words on a private medical forum, has meted out its own form of rough justice. Dr Scot Junior remains suspended and his career temporarily on hold. But Black, Needham and Paice have become fair game for medical bloggers everywhere and objects of ridicule for anyone with access to a search engine

Superblogging is a coordinated blogging attack from multiple sources, by people with a common interest, whose only recourse is the Internet. These people are Google's constituents, their millions of pennies have, in part, paid for the Internet revolution. Google at least, seems to be protecting the anonymous voices that made it rich.

Harassment and Bullying in the NHS

A young doctor is suspended and his career ruined for saying a few words in a private internet forum against one of the senior doctors in the NHS. He has apparently been reported to the General Medical Council and the situation is continuing to escalate.

If this happened in industry, it would not matter. Junior Manager writes that the "Chairman of Montsanto is a turd" in a private forum. Junior Manager apologises, gets sacked and promptly gets appointed in a different company. By the way, in case the Chairman of Montsanto is reading this - please show yourself to be above Needham, Paice and Black and do not report me to the General Vitamin Council for being rude and offensive.

This case matters because medicine is a government monopoly. This young man's career is finished. The dreadful trio of Needham, Paice and Black have destroyed him. The GMC will not let him go - although please Catto prove me wrong. He will lose his registration or at the very least it will be made "conditional". This will go with him for the rest of his career in medicine and after.

Yet again, I am ashamed to belong to a profession that has structured itself so that patient care comes last, and bullies and harasses its members so that no one dares speak out about what is happening. Somewhere I wrote about the medicine as a cult. Its behaviour is beginning to resemble that of the worst kind of secret society. Its knowledge is kept secret, access is limited, and it silences all who dare criticise.

Doctors are being intimidated. This case is a warning to any young doctor speaking out against the medical authorities. He might have made some rash comments. But, fearing that he is the tip of the iceberg, Needham, Paice and Black have cut him off at the knees. Be warned! You cannot cut the tip off an iceberg

This is also a moment of deep irony.

Working for a healthier tomorrow "Dame Carol Black's review of the health of the working age population" Dame Carol Black's recent rise to power is based on a report to get people back into work. Yet Dame Carol Black is the centre of a row keeping a doctor out of work??
